The Separated Rooms |

The Separated Rooms sheds light on the unique listening experience and primary medium of such transmission, the space. Five artists approach sound with manifested and nuanced perspectives. By responding to the infrastructure of an ordinary yet uncanny site, the artists create a momentary situation that visualizes inaudible sound - Hissing and roaring, soft and loud, slow and fast, rational yet surrealistic, intimate but irritating, biological and psychological… While a contemplative image is multi-layered, and juxtaposed with the urbanscape, sound resonates and ricochets within a confined everyday life setting, and it finally dissolved into the space .

The diversity of works reflects some phenomenon in Hong Kong - nerve-racking insomnia caused by over sensitivity, cyclical pitch hitting our hearing components, mental and emotional attachment to the love ones, etc. Aural space can hardly be shared, and so does individual listening experience. We are human after all, more or less we are mediated and habituated to certain mode of listening that is shaped by the society. Through a series of site-specific installation and improvisation, five artists aim to promote the mode of active listening, which heightens the relationship between interior and exterior space of participants.

The exhibition/event is curated by LEE Kai Chung.
Five artists are CHOI Tsui Yin Grace, LEE Kai Chung, WONG Ka Chung Dorothy, WU Jiaru and ZHAO Qian Echo.

About the curator

Lee Kai Chung researches historical events, political system and ideology. Lee addresses the lack of proper governance on records and pending legislation of Archives Law. Through performance, documentation and installation, Lee considers individual gesture as form of political and artistic transgression that resonates with the pre-existing narratives of history and story. In his ongoing research, Archive of the People, Lee investigates framework of such socio-political issues, whether through a series of negotiation and encounter with Government departments.
