Other Sides of Evidence @ Osage Hong Kong
Feb 6-25, 2017; Opening Reception: Feb 9 (Thurs), 7-9pm

Generally we believe that facts and evidence help establish the ‘what-has-been’, yet they are not accountable for a truth. The burdens of facts and evidence are in fact multifaceted. In recent years, ‘what is real’ or ‘what is the truth’ has become a popular enquiry, covering topics ranging from real universal suffrage, real childhood, mockumentary, reality TV, to realities and truths presented by the algorithm behind social media and search engine, and lately, Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year 2016, ‘post-truth’. If we see ‘evidence’ as data just obtained, then it is worth exploring what else they could answer besides a truth. While people demand the truth about things and appreciate realness in life, as creative agents we artists also explore aesthetic truths. We research on our subjects and then make use of the findings to create. “Other Sides of Evidence” will present different responses from artists Swing Lam, Eric Tsang, Solomon Yu and the art group Archive of the People to these parallel roles – bearing responsibility for inquiring and observing reality and the truth, yet exercising our license to make believe and create.

This exhibition is supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the venue is generously sponsored by Osage Art Foundation.

About the Artists

Swing Lam (CUHK MA Multicultural Studies 2010) is an urban flâneur and an enthusiast of Hong Kong films. Lam will re-visit and narrate a chapter of his love life, up close and personal. Taking up the last job of his ex-girlfriend, he paints a story of an artist trying to trace the year his ex has had, from the work desk she has left behind to the scribbles on her paperwork.

Eric Tsang (CUHK MA Fine Arts 2014) works in journalism and has been obsessed for years with snapshots of traffic incidents constantly shared on social media by the public. While going through his downloaded collection of these images on his phone, he begins to wonder if there is something that links them to his private life.

Solomon Yu (CUHK MA Fine Arts 2011) is interested in the operation of imagery. Combing through footages of old TV news reports, he is fascinated by different types of spatial illusion constructed to assist news presentation. He attempts to deconstruct the spatial arrangement as seen on screen and explores the visual elements in the newsroom studio.

Archive of the People is a research and art group that applies different creative practices to address the governance on records, legislation of Archives Law and their related politics. In this exhibition, five members of the group – Lee Kai-chung (Founder of Archive of the People), Grace Choi Tsui-yin (CityU School of Creative Media MFA 2016), Elaine Lin (Collection Manager, Asia Art Archive), Dorothy Wong Ka-chung (CityU School of Creative Media MFA 20162016) and Wu Jiaru (CityU School of Creative Media MFA 2017) – will adopt various approaches to respond to the operations and underlying systems of public auctions, currently organised by the Government Logistics Department every two weeks.

About "Poet, Dancer, And Another One"

The Poet,
"In The Middle Of Nowhere.
We talked about the meaning of "Island 島 " In autumn in Zurich, you said when there is still bird flying above the mountain, there is island. In summer in Kanazawa, you said when migrating birds fly from the south to the north, the place where they stop in middle of the ocean, there is island.

The Dancer
I'm sailing in the fog
No sail
I’m wandering under the moon
No anchor
No destination
From here, the road disappears
Night disappear from here
Not beacons
No clear boundaries
Only spray prayers of cliffs
Leaving dreary traces of years
And a little dignified memorial

The Another One (Litter Bug)
The Litter sails across the sea, the Bug drifts with the current.
I always perspire and feel dizzy. I often fear of fainting. I have a terror of thunderstorms, ghosts, burglars, snakes! I do not dare to expect anything of others or to set high goals for myself. I do not dare to approach people who seem superior to me in any way; I do not dare to express an opinion even thought I may have a real contribution to make; I do not dare to exercise creative abilities even when I have them; I do not dare to make myself attractive, to try to impress, to seek a better position… I am a shadow without weight and substance.

The Separated Rooms |

Date: Saturday 25 June 2016
Time: First session 7:00 – 7:40 pm | Second session 8:00 – 8:40 pm

The Separated Rooms sheds light on the unique listening experience and primary medium of such transmission, the space. Five artists approach sound with manifested and nuanced perspectives. By responding to the infrastructure of an ordinary yet uncanny site, the artists create a momentary situation that visualizes inaudible sound - Hissing and roaring, soft and loud, slow and fast, rational yet surrealistic, intimate but irritating, biological and psychological… While a contemplative image is multi-layered, and juxtaposed with the urbanscape, sound resonates and ricochets within a confined everyday life setting, and it finally dissolved into the space .

The diversity of works reflects some phenomenon in Hong Kong - nerve-racking insomnia caused by over sensitivity, cyclical pitch hitting our hearing components, mental and emotional attachment to the love ones, etc. Aural space can hardly be shared, and so does individual listening experience. We are human after all, more or less we are mediated and habituated to certain mode of listening that is shaped by the society. Through a series of site-specific installation and improvisation, five artists aim to promote the mode of active listening, which heightens the relationship between interior and exterior space of participants.

The exhibition/event is curated by LEE Kai Chung. Five artists are CHOI Tsui Yin Grace, LEE Kai Chung, WONG Ka Chung Dorothy, WU Jiaru and ZHAO Qian Echo.

Participants are expected to contribute a token of HKD30 or above upon arrival. In addition, leaving in the middle of the performative event is not recommended.

RSVP is necessary. Please email 1) your name, 2) number of participants and 3) attending session (First session 7:00 – 7:40 pm | Second session 8:00 – 8:40 pm) to archiveofthepeople@gmail.com. Details of the exhibition venue will be further informed in the conformation email.

The Shape of Time | Dorothy Wong Solo Show

“The Shape of Time” is the debut solo exhibition by local emerging photographer Dorothy Wong, as well as the seventh edition of Lumenvisum’s “New Light – Young Talented Photographer Series”

“Breaking free from perspective, layers of images show frames within frames. Each picture steps from one space to another, flows from landscape to image, advances to moving image, pushes further into painting, and finally lands on the pure spatiality. The exhibition is not only about the practice of viewing layered images progressively, but also an exercise to re-evaluate how time moves in a video. ”

The work captures a glimpse of reality and dissolves images into parts. Through the reconstruction process, it points to the creative imagination that does not exist in the real world. The exhibition features Wong’s photography series “Border” and her experimental video “On The Border, From The Distance”. Detached from the norm of seeing images, both works delve into the ambiguity of images, and the perception of time and space.

Talk: "New media art: connecting technology and the society

Content
New media art is often associated with interactive installations where the audience has the illusion to be able to influence the artwork. In fact, the freedom happens only within a strict framework designed by the artist. Which kind of connections do the technology and media art favour? What could be their impact on the society? With the increase of media art intervention into the urban context, would there be any room for social awareness and education? Artists Chung Ka Hei, Jason Lam Chi Fai, Cédric Maridet, Kingsley Ng and Dorothy Wong will share their opinions on these new challenges.

Talking to a person you meet for the first and only time.
I will not make myself a picture of you.
Don’t make yourself a picture of me.
In love with a constant mode of transgression.
Let us think of authorship as something fluid,
not something that can be allocated to one single person.
Burn our works and leave by the light of the fire.
Our nerves are triggered by the flickering shadows - uncontainable, unrecognisable.

INTRODUCING A GROUP OF YOUNG VIDEO ARTISTS

Developed and curated by Linda LAI 黎肖嫻 [part of her “Where Else to Look?” project]

“Concrete video,” a term Stephane Audeguy used to describe the video art of Robert Cahen, refers to the latter’s training in the musique concrête tradition of Pierre Schaeffer, which evolved into a position on videography. Concrete videos, by extension of “musique concrête,” liberate visual and aural matter from strict mimesis of the real. In preserving abstraction as much as the figurative power of sights and sounds, a work is best understood as a “machine” systematically exploring the allowances of “pictorial effects.”

In the series “Concrete Videos,” sound and image are potential raw material for composition, pointing to worlds-to-be, rooted in the fragments of the real. All video works highlight the phenomenology of the moving image as two parallel courses of “description.” On the one hand, the image discourse, composed by the artist deploying the descriptive power of the surfaces of image fragments, unfolds in ways that commands new modes of attentiveness. On the other hand, viewers journey along the thick descriptive moment-to-moment unfolding image flow to re-learn how to see, how to listen, and how to pay attention.

Tutu and Ida, a team of Chinese and German investigators invite the audience to follow their journeys exploring the unexpected in the city of Hong Kong not knowing where everything will end up.

Three people in a room. Painting, composing, filming. Neck-deep.
Trying to make it bloom. Boom.

How to Disappear (Completely)

Video installation by Mayumi Arai & Nina Willimann

A series of practices around the process of disappearing – physically or metaphorically, temporarily and at least partially

In Chinese tradition, matters concerning the psyche and attainment of deeper insight are often approached via the body, not via the cognitive reflection. The basic idea of the Chinese martial art T’ai chi ch’uan (or Tai Chi) is linked to the philosophical principle that, if one uses hardness to resist violent force, then both sides are certainly to be injured. Instead, students are taught not to directly fight or resist an incoming force, but to meet it in softness and follow its motion while remaining in physical contact until the incoming force of attack exhausts itself or can be redirected.

Being both strangers in Hong Kong and Tai Chi beginners, we take this basic idea as our base for the development of a series of practices in order of trying to integrate, to become part of, to gradually disappear in a foreign environment.

absense

Site specific multimedia performance by Liane Mah, Philipp Spillmann, Ma Haijiao, Tobias Fandel

“absense” invites you to experience a very unusual spatial performance situation. How do your physical feeling and your thoughts affect your perception of space, movements, sounds and not least images and words? What can you see, what can you hear and how do you deal with it? Does your cognition leads you to new aesthetical experiences by reflecting the absence?
